I once read a study commissioned by tobacco giant Philip Morris that concluded that smoking saves the government money. A study in the Czech Republic estimates that $30 million was saved in 1999 because smokers die early and do not need to be supported and housed. In addition, "indirect positive effects" of early deaths, like savings on health care, pensions and welfare bring the total benefit to the Czech government up to $146 million. The study proves to me that you can take selectively used facts to twist the truth to fit almost any conclusion you choose to draw. There are many troubling implications about this study like the obvious bias used by researchers, the devaluation of the aged, and the consideration of cost over life. Is saving money ever a justification for death? Can we put a dollar value on life? Can we comfort a grieving family by telling them how much money they will save?

The Bible starts by teaching us that God is the Creator and giver of life. We honor God by taking care of our physical bodies. Good health is a gift from God that is beyond our control. No one is guaranteed long life by avoiding bad health habits, like smoking, but healthy choices often lead to longer life. Jesus states in John 10:10, "A thief comes to steal, kill and destroy, but I came that you may have life, and have it more abundantly." Jesus is speaking about life that is full, first Spiritually, then in ever other way. We see that Satan is the destroyer who steals away life and delights in bringing on an early death. The simple fact is that the richest way to live life to the fullest is in obedience to God and His Word. God made us and when we choose health over destruction, we are honoring God. Do not sell yourself short by living in rebellion of your Creator who loves you and wants what is best for you.
