Text Box: Most of us in our culture invest a lot in insurance. We have life, car, home and health insurance for starters. The insurance industry would have us believe that we can make life certain, if we only had the right insurance.
The truth is that life is never certain. I would suggest that God allows for life’s surprises so that we would put our trust and hope in Him alone. Prov. 3:5,6 says,
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight
One example of how life can be quite uncertain is the recent news accounts of Tornadoes in Mississippi. I read the following account of a church that was destroyed in Yazoo City.
Dale Thrasher, 60, had been alone in Hillcrest Baptist Church when the tornado ripped away wood and metal until all that was left was rubble, Thrasher, and the communion table he had climbed under as he prayed for protection.
"The whole building caved in," he said. "But me and that table were still there.”
Sunday was sunny and breezy as Thrasher and about three dozen members of the Yazoo City church stood in a circle and sang "Till the Storm Passes By." Thrasher reminded the group that the church has survived tough times before. They rebuilt after their building was Text Box: destroyed by arson about 10 years ago.
I am taken with the image of praying for protection under the communion table. It is nice to read of an answered prayer in your local paper.
It is at the communion table that we are reminded that our sins are covered by the work of Jesus Christ on the cross. It is at that communion table that we are grounded in history and sure of our future. As I Corinthians 11:26 says, “whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.” In the present, we look to the cross and our future.
The communion table reminds us of our salvation. When we know that Jesus is our Savior, we can weather the storms of life. It is good news that Dale Thrasher survived the storm, but the hope of the Christian is that the worst case scenario is far better than our current life. The believer can say with the Apostle Paul, “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” (Phil 1:21)
The truth is that a story like the tornado in Yazoo City reminds us that we can have all our insurances paid up, but life can still send us a surprise. Thank God for the ability to pray to an all powerful God when the unexpected happens.
May we all continue to place our trust in the One who is able to strengthen us and be with us through all the storms in life. “To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy” (Jude 24)
